Water

We are looking at water efficiency and conservations improvements in all areas of our operations by measuring our water consumption and investigating methods to reduce consumption of potable water.

These include re-designing fuselage coatings to require less cleaning and waxing, setting shorter on-board bathroom tap flows, using seawater in air conditioning systems, and reusing excess water from water-cooled air-conditioning systems where appropriate.

Biodiversity and Conservation

The conservation of habitats and species diversity continues to be important to Dragonair. We recognise that we have an impact on the destinations to which we fly, and hence we are developing and incorporating biodiversity elements into our Sustainable Development Strategy, in partnership with the non-governmental organisation, Conservation International.

Dragonair has been working closely with The Nature Conservancy since 2004 on the inflight charity fundraising campaign “Change for Conservation”, to raise awareness of the importance of nature conservation. As of December 2010, nearly HK$8 million has been raised.

The fund is used in northwest Yunnan, China to: create a system of protected areas with the policies and funding necessary to sustain them; to protect vital watershed areas, especially along the Yangtze and Mekong rivers; to alleviate poverty, one of the principal causes of unsustainable natural resource use and biodiversity loss; and to develop sustainable economic alternatives for the people there.

Finally, in 2011, we have adopted a Sustainable Food Policy to ensure that unsustainably produced food items are not consumed at company paid functions, offered in food/beverage products or catering services provided/managed by the company, or served on board any Dragonair or its sister airline Cathay Pacific flights.
